A.Cords & Outlets
1-Make sure you use certified cords “UL” meaning the product has been tested and meets the laboratory’s standard to be used by itself for a specific purpose. Meaning it’s considered the best quality to use.
2-Keep water away from cords and outlets because they can cause a spark which causes fire.
3-Replace any electrical cord that is cracked or frayed.
B. Electrical Appliances
1-Keep portable appliances like space heaters and iron at least three feet away from anything that can burn.
2-Make sure you unplug appliances when you leave the house. Make sure you don’t go out for groceries while using an electrical appliance example, space heater or washing dryer.
3-If an electric appliance smokes or has an unusual smell, unplug it immediately, then have it serviced before using it again or rather replace.
Transition: Speaking about detecting smokes or unusual smells.
II. Safety fire equipments
A.Smoke Alarms/Carbon Monoxide
1- They alert you if there is smoke in your. And carbon monoxide detectors detect if there’s any gas that causes fire you probably can’t see.
2- Smoke detectors should be installed on every level of your home that you sleep in.
3-It should be tested monthly and should change the battery every year so that it works properly.
B.Home Fire Sprinkler Systems
1- It’s crucial before firefighters arrive because it actually stops some or most of the fire outbreaks. Which makes the firefighters job easy to help civilians.
C.Fire Extinguishers
1- Make sure fire extinguishers are installed, fully charged, not damaged, and readily accessible.
2- You need to know how to use them when the time comes,so that you can help stop the fire quickly.
III. Building access and evacuation routes
A.Fire Safety Exit Signs
1-You want to be familiar with exit signs that give directions on escape routes and what to do and not to do.
B.Know your escape routes
1-Having a primary exit, alternate exit and a meeting place for your family is important just in case a fire breaks out.
C.Do not use elevators
1- Elevators get stuck because when the fire spreads it causes the electricity of the building to affect the elevator.
2- The elevator fills up with smoke quickly which can affect your breathing. And also an important fact is that most people who pass away from fire actually die from the smoke rather than the burning.
Conclusion
About 20,000 fires,150 deaths and nearly 1,000 injuries every year have been caused by children. Keep kids away from things that can catch fire and also make them aware about safety precautions.
