Self Assessment Essay

As a Student I know my writing is one of the ways to demonstrate my academic prowess. I had a certain objective in mind. All I wanted was to pass the class. But as we got into Phase One, I understood that my aim was to become a better writer. I wanted to increase my capacity to analyze a text or a reading specifically because I’ve had trouble with it in the past. Now I can state with assurance that I’ve improved that component of my writing, as well as many other areas that I didn’t think I needed to as a student. Each of the three Phases had a specific goal, which it successfully attained. The goal of the first phase of the language and literacy story was to emphasize specific occurrences in order to show how language has impacted me throughout my entire life. This improved knowledge of the requirements and intent/message of a text. By examining the texts, Phase 2’s Rhetorical Analysis sought to ascertain the various writing techniques the author employed. Phase Three Research Essay comes last. The goal of this phase is to assess my ability to locate evidence that backs up my thesis, which is based on the topic I choose, investigative genomics. However, the focus will be mostly on the learning objectives that were specified, which I met.

Two of the outcomes is to recognize the role of language in empowering, oppressing, and hierarchizing languages and their users, and being open to communicating across different languages and cultures. And also Exploring and analyzing, in writing and reading, a variety of genres and rhetorical situations. I was able to acknowledge both outcomes through Amy Tan. In her essay, Amy Tan argued that although languages might have various forms or systems, this shouldn’t make us think less of other people. She created the book as a means of empowering those who experience the kind of discrimination her mother did. I was able to identify the main rhetorical device  she employs more in her story. Tan uses the example of the hospital ignoring her mother during the CAT scan as a technique to get the audience to feel sorry for her. This is an effect of pathos.

I additionally showed that I could explore and analyze many genres and rhetorical situations in my writing and reading. For instance, “If Black English Isn’t a Language, Then Tell Me What Is,” by James Baldwin. I took note of the way he supports his claims with historical examples. When I first read the novel, it was one of the things that stood out to me right away, but I didn’t know what it was called. I was aware that it was a rhetorical device frequently used by writers in argumentative essays or articles. This time period helped me in some ways with my research abilities to establish that it is termed Allusion.

Locating research sources in the library’s databases or archives and online and assessing them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias are other learning objectives that I was successful in achieving. This was primarily accomplished during the research paper phase, and it has unquestionably increased my ability to find academic sources that provide credence to my topic. I was unfamiliar with Google Scholar. In order to aid me during this phase, learning how to search for sources on Google Scholar was also crucial. Giving credit to the writers whose sources I utilize is obviously vital, therefore one of the key subjects I learnt in this research phase was that Google Scholar has all the citations in MLA or APA style.

Another objective is being able to Compose texts that integrate your stance with appropriate sources using strategies such as summary, critical analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and argumentation And also apply citation styles systematically.Which I successfully did. Example from my essay, I made a point that investigative tools help solve crimes in the second paragraph.

Basically, after quoting, it’s always important that I paraphrase and summarize what the author says to make the point clear to my audience and that it is reasonable to my thesis. My use of the rhetorical analysis logos, pathos and ethos, will show you how it helps convince my audience to agree with my thesis in this essay and in more essays I will be writing in the future. Lastly I also successfully cited all my sources correctly which is critical in writing a research paper.

In conclusion, this semester was interesting since I was able to advance my writing skills in under five months. The fact that I met the learning objectives, which act as checkpoints, demonstrates that I have demonstrated my understanding of the various parts of writing by achieving all of the aforementioned learning outcomes, which are demonstrated through my work.
