Only Daughter by Sandra Cisneros is a story I can relate to. I’m the youngest son in an immigrant family. And trying to impress or get approved by my Mother and Father because of what my older brothers have accomplished in school is something I have been dealing with especially in high school. In her story, she expressed her feelings about being the only daughter of six sons. In the third paragraph of the text, she introduces her first problem of being the only daughter “in a family of six sons forced me by circumstances to spend a lot of time by myself because my brothers felt it beneath them to play with a girl in public”. She felt like an outsider and was lonely. However, she later shows that it made her think and prepared herself to be a writer. Also her father was hoping she would get a husband when she went to college. Which was a pressure she felt being the only daughter of six sons. However, her focus was her education. From this story, I think her audience is people that are in an immigrant family, feel excluded, or feel pressured by their family. And her message to them is to focus on the things they want to do. and to know that their family will always love them no matter what.
