I do resonate with Amy Tan in the 3rd paragraph when she was aware of the different English she uses. My situation is similar in some way. I speak broken English with my family members and gradually when I’m in a situation where I’m speaking with someone who’s not my family, for example a friend ,and at the same time speaking with my brothers. I subconsciously change formal English to broken and vice during the conversation. Based on Amy Tan’s essay, her thesis is that languages do have different forms or structure and it shouldn’t be a reason to think less of other people. She convinces her audience of her message by giving multiple examples from her life experiences. The essay does create an effect of ethos, pathos and logos. In the beginning, her saying that she’s a writer, and she’s going to give her personal reasons especially when she states “all the Englishes I grew up with” is an effect of ethos. Also the situation during the CAT scan is an effect of pathos as Tan uses that example of the hospital ignoring her mother as a way for the audience to feel sympathy for her. An effect on logos happens when Tan states that her mother “reads the Forbes report, listens to Wall Street Week, converses daily with her stockbroker, and reads all of Shirley MacLaine’s books with ease”. I think that’s a way of her using examples of reads her mother does daily, a way to persuade her audience logically.
